Program Strand Descriptions
(You can choose only one strand. Please read the program strand
descriptions and select the one strand that best fits your topic.)
|
Impactful Instruction
Presentations in this strand include the “what” and the “how”
of instruction.
- What to teach includes all topics related to course development, curriculum design, and
integration of academics with CTE. Examples of Rigorous Programs of Study are included here.
- The How of instruction includes presentations on topics like learning styles, contextual
teaching, best teaching practices for improved learning, technology in the classroom, and assessments.
- Also included are school structures for improved student success such as smaller learning
communities and career academies
Career Counseling & Coaching
- Presentations in this strand include career guidance tools (such as interest inventories and
occupational outlook information), the role of career counseling in Programs of Study, individual
learning plans, career coaching, and counseling curriculum for various education levels.
- Also included are topics such as counselor professional development, dropout prevention, and parental
engagement.
Adult Career Pathways
- Presentations in this strand include an overview of the characteristics of various adult groups
in need of a second chance at education and family-supporting wages.
- In addition, topics of interest are the obstacles and challenges faced by adults and the support
services for meeting those needs.
- Adult literacy, adult basic education, dislocated workers, remediation, and retraining are also
topics that may be addressed in this strand.
- Military pathways and credit for prior learning are part of this conference strand.
- Also, topics that may be covered in other strands like learning strategies and counseling may be
included here if oriented toward adult populations.
Leadership and Operational Strategies
This strand includes topics of interest to those in positions of leadership that
may or may not be included
in other categories.
- It includes introductory and in-depth information about Career Pathways such as definitions, organizational
structures, partnership development, funding, Perkins Act reauthorization, and the collection and use of
data for decision making.
- Also included here would be information on choosing appropriate types of professional development
and technical assistance.
Pathway Transitions
Presentations in this strand deal with issues involved in helping students transition
from one level of education to the next and on to careers.
- Included are topics like dual and articulated credit, multiple entrance and exit points, recruitment,
remediation, dropout prevention, and the role of community colleges.
Workforce & Economic Development Solutions
Involvement of business and industry partners is key to the success of Career Pathways
programs. Presentations in this strand will include the elements of successful partnerships.
- Active advisory boards, legal issues, internships, apprenticeships, and business involvement in curriculum
development will be topics worth sharing.
- The link between education structured around Career Pathways and the resulting improvement in the availability
of a highly qualified workforce and economic prosperity are a central focus of this strand.
Funding and Sustainability
Many consider "funding" as the most important issue in their state. Sustainability deals
with how to keep Career Pathways programs active and successful during a time when funding is being reduced.
- Some of the topics in this strand are advocacy, sources of funding, grant writing, building community support, employer
support, obtaining buy-in, return on investment, and internal investment.
